How does the Airport Logo API work?

Accepted Answer

Make a GET request to the endpoint with your API key and airport code. Using ICAO (e.g. KJFK, EDDF): GET /airports/icao/{ICAO}?key=YOUR_KEY. Using IATA (e.g. JFK, FRA): GET /airports/iata/{IATA}?key=YOUR_KEY — the API automatically resolves the IATA code to ICAO via our database. Add &variant=logo or &variant=logo-white to change the asset type.

Accepted Answer

Three variants are supported: icon (default — compact square icon, falls back to logo), logo (full color logo), logo-white (white version for dark backgrounds, falls back to logo). Specify with ?variant=icon, ?variant=logo, or ?variant=logo-white.

Does the API support IATA codes in addition to ICAO?

Yes. Both identifier types are supported. Use /airports/icao/{ICAO} for ICAO codes (no database lookup required, fastest path) or /airports/iata/{IATA} for IATA codes (the API resolves to ICAO automatically via our airports database). Resolved mappings are cached for 30 days.

What file formats and sizes are available?

SVG is the default for all paid tiers and delivers the sharpest result at any size. PNG is available via ?format=png, with optional ?size=200 (pixels). Free tier: PNG only, max 200px. T1 tier: PNG only, max 600px. Higher tiers: SVG + PNG at any size. The Edge CDN caches all responses with a 1-year immutable header.

What happens if an airport logo is unavailable?

The API returns a deterministic SVG fallback — a colored rectangle with the first three characters of the airport code rendered in white. The fallback uses a short cache TTL (60 seconds) so it will automatically update once a real logo is added. Use ?force=true to bypass the KV cache and trigger a fresh lookup.

The API covers 600+ airports worldwide, including all major international hubs, regional airports, and growing airports across every continent. The dataset is continuously updated. For icons the coverage is higher than for full logos.

How are logos kept up to date?

Accepted Answer

Our pipeline monitors airport rebrandings and new airport openings on a daily basis. When an update is detected the new asset is pushed to the R2 bucket automatically. The KV resolution cache has a 30-day TTL, so updates propagate within minutes for new requests.

What do the observability response headers mean?

X-Cache: MISS (fresh fetch) or KV (served from cache). X-Lookup: skipped (ICAO direct), ok (IATA resolved), or failed (no DB match). X-Resolved-Via: direct or iata-db. X-Asset: the actual filename served from the bucket. X-Source: R2 (from object storage), TwicPics (CDN transform), or fallback.
